When we first moved in to our house overlooking shelby bottoms greenway, we had no idea what we were getting. All we knew was that for as close to downtown Nashville as we were, we were extremely blessed to have a view of green, not concrete!
After the first 4th of July celebration rolled around, though, we knew that the blessings far exceeded the green view. Our back porch is our very VERY favorite place to sit on 4th of July because the horizon lights up with fireworks from all the neighboring towns. We get a free show right from our own backyard…literally. Our goal is to never miss one of these celebrations as long as we own this home. And when we move to our farm, we will have a large panoramic photo of the 4th of July horizon blown up for us to take with us. Sounds silly but it really is that (more…)

Everyone has a lens through which they see the world and everyone’s view is a little bit different. The lenses are shaped by our stories and these stories are what give our lives meaning.
There is power in a story.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. It has the ability to tell a story with OUT words. Photographs are secret story tellers. They allow us to revisit stories with a glance. This is one reason I’m so drawn to creating them. I think the story is truly the essence of the art.
I want you to look at some images below. Some have a clear story. Some have back stories. Some have different stories to each viewer. I will share my thoughts below and ask that you do the same by leaving a comment if any of them move you as well. Tell me what story the image tells YOU. {This is a great exercise}.

To me, this image represents faith. Obviou (more…)

So, its been an emotional week around here for me. The sermon on Sunday shook me.
Imagine yourself as an 8 year old. You live in public housing with your younger siblings. All you have known in your life is insecurity and inconsistency. One morning you wake up to find that your mother has abandoned you all.
That is the story of a little girl who walked into the Martha O’Bryan center with two empty 2-liter bottles. She had no food, and no electricity. She came seeking water.
As I heard those words, my stomach sank. Tears began streaming down my face as I sat in the sanctuary surrounded by coats and ties, beautiful necklaces and expensive perfumes. I didn’t feel guilty; I just felt SICK.
“She didn’t CHOOSE this.”
She could have been ME. (I could have been her…) And by what seems the (more…)

To me, there is no more horrifying moment than the minutes before____________. (Fill in the blank with your choice of something scheduled). I loathe countdowns. They make me nervous and frankly, just upset. When I rode my cross country test in my very first (beginner novice) event (completely decked out with all but alternating colored clackity bell boots), I asked my trainer if she would kindly ask the guy officiating the start box to NOT do the 10 second countdown for me…he could just tell me when to go by saying “ok. go.” (I got some funny looks that day…and for more than just that reason. A simple glance at the outfit to the left can shed some light on that.)
Eventually I got used to the start box countdown (by tuning it out) but I never have really gotten over countdowns in general. Its only been by accident that I recently figured out why. The way I see it lately is that counti (more…)

“When the waves are taking you under
Hold on just a little bit longer
He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger
The pain ain’t gonna last forever
And things can only get better
Believe me
This is gonna make you stronger.”
“stronger” by-Mandisa
Anytime I get teary when I listen to the words of a song, I feel it completely necessary to share. When I looked up this artist and discovered that her album was entitled “what if we were real,” I was sold. It was like someone read my mind.

I have to admit, I have MANY blog drafts started and zero completed. I started to set up April’s newsletter 2 weeks ago and sat down today to finish it and just couldn’t. “I just don’t have anything to say.” Which is strange because TONS has been going on. I have the dreaded writers block. {I thought I signed up to shoot (more…)
