Today is a day to celebrate the ones we love. Its Valentine’s Day!! Seriously, its one of my favorite days even though Brandon scoffs “its a corporate holiday.” {sour puss}

So yes… anyway, Happy Valentines Day!! Want to know how to make your own heart bokeh image like the one above? Sweet! Cause that’s what this post is about.

Bokeh refers to the quality of the areas of an image that are deliberately not in focus. Usually you notice it as circles of blur in the background of an image with a shallow depth of field.

What you need to turn it from circles to hearts:

1) a wide aperture lens. I used a 50mm f/1.8 a lens with even wider aperture (f/1.4) would be even better.
2) black paper (construction paper is perfect)

Take off your lens cap and trace a circle on the paper to cut to this size. Cut out the circle, fold in half and cut a small (12-15mm) heart in the center. Unfold the paper, cut a strip to go around the outside (see image below)

Take a shot of lights in low-light. One tip to note: autofocus lenses are going to turn the bokeh filter as they focus so make sure as you look through the lens, you see the heart right side up. ๐Ÿ˜‰ OH! and you’ll want to make sure and take the shot at the widest aperture possible (for me it was f/1.8). ๐Ÿ˜‰

Happy Valentines Day!! Have fun!!
