So, if you follow me on facebook, you might have noticed I am a recent convert to the world of juicing. I watched the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” on Netflix one night and it changed my thoughts on everything. (I highly recommend it to everyone looking for a new path to health). The next day I bought a juicer and set out to give it a try. The first few days were pretty rough, I’ll admit. The juice tasted terrible and I just didn’t get it. Then on a whim during lunch hour, I visited Whole Foods and had a fresh juice (smoothie) from their juice bar. IT. WAS. DELISH. **Nashville residents– hit up the Whole Foods in the Hill Center (Green Hills). The juice bar in Franklin does not make juice smoothies and this makes a monsterous difference to a beginner**

Wholly recommitted, I set forth on what has become a summer-long journey thus far. 3+ months into it, I actually crave juice when I don’t have it now. It makes such a significant difference in my day. You could say I’m some what addicted to it. (And of all things to be addicted to, I’m good with this one). Even Brandon misses juice if he goes a day or so without it. The difference I’ve felt in energy and lack of illness is significant. Its basically a rapid infusion of pure nutrients into your body. You can feel your cells rejoicing!! haha!!

Dental PSA: if you are going to start juicing regularly, you will want to go to a health foods store (Whole Foods/EarthFare etc) and buy Xylitol mints. After you juice, you’ll want to pop one of these guys to protect your teeth. High acid and high sugar juices (anything with fruit falls into this category) will reek havoc on your teeth. The Xylitol was recommended to me by my dentist. Brushing immediately after a high acid juice is also not recommended as it can be further abrasive (it has to do with pH levels and saliva). Rinse your mouth out with water after juicing then brush your teeth about 20 minutes later. 😉

Below are my MOST favorite recipes. I will post more as I taste them. You do need a juicer. Vitamix blenders are awesome in their own realm but if you put all of these into one, you are going to end up with a guacamole like texture that will be rough to swallow. So heads up on that. 😉

Green Juice: (go organic with kale, cucumber, celery and apple. Lemons, bananas, pineapple and oranges are LESS dirty than the others and can be conventional)

3 leaves (full leaves) of kale
1/2 large cucumber
3-4 stalks celery
1 large green apple (cored)
1″ (diameter) very thin slice of ginger root
1 peeled lemon
I sometimes add a large cut of pineapple (peeled) in the mornings for added sweetness.

For beginners I suggest putting a banana and the juice above into a blender until smooth (you cant juice a banana). This is what my Whole Foods juice-smoothie tasted like!

Beet Juice:

1 whole beet
1 orange (peeled)
3-4 whole (big) carrots
1 large green apple (cored)
(you can add banana + juice to blender and blend like above)

Carrot + Orange

3-4 whole carrots
1-2 oranges (peeled)
1″ (diameter) thin slice of ginger root

When I have extra juice (which is rare) I make it into Zoku pops. The kids actually LOVE these and its a great way to “eat” veggies.

Do you juice?? Share your favorite recipes below!! Also, if you have any specific questions, send them to me and I’ll do a FAQ post. 😉 Happy juicing! Let me know how it goes!!
